What Kind Of Brush Do I Need? https://texaspaint.com/what-kind-of-brush-do-i-need/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 12:08:29 +0000 https://texaspaint.com/?p=21194

What Kind Of Brush Do I Need?

Paint BrushOnce you decided on a color for your paint project, it is time to get all the necessary supplies including brushes. If you go to your local paint supply store, you will find shelves full of different kind of brushes. There are different sizes, shapes, angles, textures and of course prices. It can be really hard to determine which brush is best for your paint project. Here is a quick guide to help you select the right brush for your project.

Brush Types

The type of paint you are using will determine what material your brush should be made of.  There are two categories of paintbrush: those made of natural-hair bristles and those made with synthetic materials (nylon or polyester).  For alkyd or oil-based paints and coatings, you can use either natural bristle brushes or synthetic bristle brushes. Experts say, high-quality natural bristle brushes work best when applying enamels or any topcoat. Use only brushes with synthetic bristles when painting with any type of latex coating. When properly cleaned and stored, they will continue to apply paint smoothly and uniformly for years to come.

Brush Sizes

The size and shape of the brush you need will depend on the  size of the surface you are planning to paint. To do most jobs properly, take the time to match the brush to the job. Use large brushes to cover large surfaces and small brushes to cover small areas. A wall brush will be a thicker flat brush that will hold a lot of paint. You will use it for painting large surfaces. An angled sash brush will have bristles that are cut at an angle. You will use this brush for painting trim and around windows. A thin angled sash brush has a thinner profile and will be ideal more delicate work.

If you are not sure which brush to get, come on over to Texas Paint and ask the experts!

Texas Paint has been in business since 1947 and is an independent dealer of Benjamin Moore Paints and Finishes. Our trained specialists are available to assist you in selecting paint and supplies for your home or business.

Brushes and Rollers https://texaspaint.com/brushes-and-rollers/ Sun, 05 Dec 2021 19:40:33 +0000 http://helmpaint.com/texas/?p=15881

Why is it important to purchase new brushes and rollers when you begin a new paint job?

It’s important to purchase new brushes and rollers when you begin a new paint job because there are different types of paint brushes for different tasks. Check out our Brushes and Rollers Tips below:

Paint Brushes

Corona Cool Brush at Texas Paint (Brushes Rollers Tips)

Corona Cool Brush

Paint brushes, as well as stain brushes, are available in natural and acrylic bristles. For example, it is best to use natural brushes for oil based products, whereas it’s best to use acrylic brushes for water-based latex. There are differentiators in size, width, straight bristle edges, and angled bristle edges to choose among, as well as the type of bristles needed, making it somewhat complicated to select the correct brushes for the job. As with any type of job you want to accomplish, it is imperative to have the proper tools. Prior to using a new paint brush for the first time, it’s best to brush the bristles against the palm of your handle to release loose bristles. This will avoid having loose bristles show up in your painted finish.

Roller Covers

Benjamin Moore Roller at Texas Paint (Brushes Rollers Tips)

Benjamin Moore Roller

Also, when purchasing roller covers, they must match the width of the roller. The most common roller widths are 3”, 4”, 9”, or 18”. Of course, you will have to put a roller on your shopping list if you do not already own one, in which case the covers will be included. Some covers have a thicker nap than others. For smoother walls, a thinner nap of 3/16” or 1/4“ is required. Highly textured walls require a thicker nap of 3/4” because it holds more paint and gives better coverage on the textured surface. Rollers are best used to cover large surface areas. Prior to a roller cover’s first use, it is best to condition it by washing it in water or covering it with painter’s tape to remove loose fibers. The fibers will not appear hardened in the final coat and the finish will be pristine.

Scuffs, Dings & Scratches https://texaspaint.com/scuffs-dings-scratches/ Mon, 22 Nov 2021 11:01:13 +0000 https://texaspaint.com/?p=16629

Scuffs, Dings & Scratches – How You Can Protect Your Walls

You know how easy it is to get scuffs, dings and scratches on your freshly painted wall. The vacuum cleaner is undoubtedly responsible for some, that new piece of furniture you moved in can probably be blamed for some and if you have children, sometimes there is no way of telling how they manage to get to your walls. Now, there is a quick and easy fix that will protect your walls and woodwork. Ultra Spec Scuff-X Latex Paint is scuff resistant, durable and can be washed down much more easily, so you and your family can enjoy your home without worrying about the walls.

For more information take a look at the Youtube video or click here: https://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/ultra-spec-scuff-x

Scuffs - Scuff-X

How It Works

Ultra Spec Scuff-X is formulated with scuff and stain-resistant technology, that provides the ultimate protection in scuff and stain-resistance, allowing for the ultimate washability for long-term durability. The line is available in 3 finishes: Matte, Eggshell, and Satin; and is available in a wide range of color choices numbering in the thousands. This proprietary formula is designed to dry quickly, within 2 – 3 hours after the application of the first coat, for minimal down time on the job. Each gallon of paint covers approximately 350 – 400 square feet and has low VOCs. This product line qualifies for LEED v4 Credit and is CHPS Certified, which are green building practices. Benjamin Moore, the industry leader in cutting-edge coatings technology and development, is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. This Council is “a nonprofit organization of building industry leaders working to make environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy buildings.”

Hotels, Schools, and Healthcare Facilities

In busy hotels, restaurants and hospitality venues where first impressions count, scuff-resistant SCUFF-X helps keep walls in pristine condition. Traffic is always an issue in the hospitality industry. From rooms service to luggage, the walls can definitely get a lot of scuffs.

Schools are always in a constant battle to keep the walls fresh from scuffs and dings. Kids are throwing their backpacks down, playing ball, and simply being kids. SCUFF-X allows high-traffic corridors, lecture halls, gymnasiums, locker rooms and dormitories to be painted quickly with minimal disruption to student learning and resists scuffs to keep walls looking freshly-painted.

For environments in which patient health is of primary concern, maintaining clean, unsoiled walls is key. SCUFF-X resists scuffing; its proprietary formula contains antimicrobial additives to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of the paint film, making it an ideal choice for busy waiting areas, exam rooms and laboratories in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and therapeutic facilities. Plus, SCUFF-X is eligible for LEED® v4 credit.

Which type of paint brush should I use? https://texaspaint.com/type-paint-brush-use/ Sat, 16 Oct 2021 15:40:52 +0000 https://helmpaint.com/?p=15503

With all of the different kinds of paint available, there are brushes that are more suitable for one type of paint over another.

paint brushOn the marketplace, there are a variety of paintbrushes in different sizes, shapes, prices, materials, lengths, and bristle types. One could say that choosing the appropriate paintbrush is often as difficult as selecting the most desirable paint type and color. The brush selection process is centered around the surface, room, or project you’re working on as well. Luckily, there are only a few brushes that you really need in your toolbox to handle most of the DIY chores you might have around your house. These are the four things you should take into consideration any time you’re looking for the apropos paintbrush for the job: Bristle Type; Brush Width; Bristle Shape; and Bristle Tips.

BRISTLE TYPE

There are two types of bristles, also known as filaments: natural and synthetic. Natural bristles are made from animal hair and are best suited for oil-based alkyd paints. On the other hand, synthetic bristles are fabricated from nylon, polyester, or a combination of both. Although some synthetic brushes can be used with alkyd paints, they are more notably suited for use with water-based laytex paints. It’s best to err on the side of caution and read the label on the brush to learn more about its best application.

BRUSH WIDTH

A good rule of thumb is to match the brush width to the surface to be painted. However, for best results, it’s wise to use a brush size just under the width of the surface.

BRISTLE SHAPE

The square-cut brush dominates the marketplace. There’s also the sash brush, which is cut on a small angle, that gets into tight places.

BRISTLE TIPS

You’ll find flagged, or split, ends on the superior quality of brushes. The flagged bristles hold more paint and readily spreads the coat of paint more smoothly, creating better coverage. Tipped bristles come to a point, as opposed to being cut flat and straight like a square-cut brush. Tipped brushes provide more precision and tighter control.

Does Blue Tape Make A Difference? https://texaspaint.com/blue-tape-make-difference/ Fri, 24 Sep 2021 15:15:03 +0000 https://helmpaint.com/?p=15277

DOES BLUE TAPE REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU’RE PAINTING?

Painting ranks among the most frequent DIY projects for homeowners. Whether it’s painting furniture, a room, woodwork and trim, or the whole house, proper prepping is requisite to doing a job well done. Every surface must be cleaned and prepared before it is painted. Blue painter’s tape helps you protect areas that you do not want to paint and helps create clean, crisp edges. It can help you achieve a flawless finish even if you’re a novice.

Texas Paint Blue Tape Painting Supplies

There are 5 things you should know when using blue painter’s tape:

1. When taping off a clean edge, use long strips of tape.
2. Overlap the pieces of tape by at least one inch to avoid points of seepage.
3. Burnish the tape by running your finger along the length of the tape to seal the edges.
4. Feather the paint in lightly over the edge of the tape and coat the paint thicker away from the tape.
5. Remove the tape after the second coat by pulling the tape downward at a 45 degree angle away from the paint so as to not pull any paint away from the wall.
Allow the tape to set 30 – 60 minutes before you begin painting. If the tape is not sticking, there is either dirt or moisture prohibiting it from adhering.

Create Patterns & Designs

You can create patterns and designs by masking them off with blue tape. When using stencils, blue tape can be used to fasten the template to the surface and easily removed to reposition the stencil in another location to continue the design. Using blue tape is also a time-saving measure because it dramatically limits the amount of touch up work necessary at the end of the job. Touch up work can be extremely tedious and time consuming. By using these techniques, you will achieve a professional quality paint finish.

Rollers, Paint Brushes, or Spray Machines? https://texaspaint.com/rollers-paint-brushes-or-spray-machines/ Sat, 21 Aug 2021 14:00:31 +0000 https://helmpaint.com/?p=15102

Rollers, Paint Brushes, or Paint Sprayers

There are so many different tools that can be used on a paint project that it can be quite confusing. The most common painting tools are paint brushes and rollers, but spray machines are also a great options. The key is to determine what kind of finish you would like to achieve –  smooth or textured finish – and what paint tools work best for your project.

Rollers, Paint Brushes or Paint SprayersRollers

Rollers provide a thin, uniform coat of paint that is even. Generally, rollers work best when painting large, flat surface areas such ceilings and walls. A roller has a porous surface which means it can hold more paint and helps to complete the project more quickly. There are many different types of rollers: smooth surface rollers and thick or fluffy rollers for a more textured surface. Rollers can also be plastic, fiber, and even sponge rollers.

Paint Brushes

The oldest and the most popular tool for painting is the paint brush. Paint brushes are small, precise and flexible which makes them perfect for painting details, small spaces and for cutting in.  The brush stroke will create a unique texture that is different from a roller finish. There are a variety of sizes and types of brushes to choose from for your project. There are narrow brushes, wide brushes, and hard and soft brushes. Depending on the type of paint, there are also nylon, polyester, and nature brushes each used for a different type of paint.

Rollers & Brushes

To get the best paint results, it is best to use both rollers and paint brushes. Start with painting the corners, difficult-to-reach areas and edges with the brush, and then cover larger surfaces with the roller. This method is efficient, not only saving time but also paint.

Paint Sprayer

Spray machines are one of the best options for projects that require a smooth surface. such as furniture and cabinets. Paint sprayers can spread paint, stains and clear finishes faster than both brushes and rollers. They are quick and can create a nice smooth surface.

If you have any questions about brushes, rollers or paint sprayers, stop by Texas Paint & Wallpaper. We will gladly help answer any questions you may have about your project.

Interior Painting Supplies https://texaspaint.com/interior-painting-supplies/ Fri, 06 Aug 2021 15:47:55 +0000 https://texaspaint.com/?p=23924

Starting A Painting project? Make sure you have the right interior painting supplies before you begin.

Using the right painting tools will ensure optimum results when it comes to painting any room in your home. After you have chosen the perfect Benjamin Moore paint color, it is important to get the right interior painting supplies to make sure that you can complete your project. Here you will find all of the information you need to make any painting project go more smoothly and get excellent results with the best Interior Painting Supplies.

Interior Painting SuppliesPaint Surface Preparation Tools

Surface preparation is crucial in painting interiors. It is essential to have a dry, clean, obstruction-free surface before you start to paint. Here are the tools you’ll need:

  • Screwdriver: to remove all outlet and switch covers
  • Painter’s tape: to place on trims, baseboards, uncovered outlets and switches, and any other surface that needs protection from paint stains
  • Paint scraper or flexible putty knife: to remove cracked or peeling paint and to apply caulking compound or putty to cracks, nail holes, and other surface depressions
  • Steel wool or a wire brush: to remove grime and old paints or stains from raw wood
  • Sandpaper: to smooth out imperfections, sags, drips, or runs on walls or other surfaces
  • Tack or damp cloth: to wipe clean surfaces to be painted after using steel wool or sandpaper

Painting Tools: Brush or Roller?

Once you’ve properly prepared the surface, you’re ready to paint. Whether to use a paintbrush or a paint roller depends on the type of paint you are using and the size of the surface to be painted.

Paintbrushes

Although using a paintbrush takes considerably longer than a roller, it is ideal for cutting in, windows, baseboards, and intricate trim work.

  • Nylon/polyester blended brushes: the best choice for all latex (water-based) paints and coatings
  • Natural China bristle brushes: the best choice for oil-based paints, stains, epoxies, and varnishes because natural bristles will soak up the water and go limp when used to apply water-based paints
  • Paintbrush sizes: A 1- to 2-inch brush is ideal for small spaces, tight trim areas, touchups, and detail work. A 2.5- to 3-inch brush is perfect for trim and corner work, and the larger 4- to 5-inch brush is recommended for larger areas like walls or side paneling.

Paint Rollers

Paint rollers make painting go more quickly, but should be used only for painting walls, ceilings, and other large, flat surfaces. They can be used to apply both latex and oil-based paints and stains and do a fine job with both gloss and semi-gloss coatings.

  • Paint roller sizes: The standard roller length is 9 inches. For smaller areas, a 4-inch or 7-inch roller cover may be used. For larger areas like walls, ceilings, and floors, 14-inch and 18-inch rollers will get the job done more quickly.

Here is a comprehensive list of painting tools and supplies you’ll need to give your interior a gorgeous and lasting paint makeover:

  • Primer and paint
  • Paint brushes and paint rollers
  • Paint paddles
  • Roller trays
  • Mineral spirits/solvents (to clean up oil-based paint)
  • Drop cloths or tarps and cleaning cloths
  • Caulking gun, putty knife, and caulk/joint compound
  • Steel wool, wire brush
  • Tack cloth
  • Painter’s tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper
